Day 15 of #vivifyactiveapril- Firefly!!!

Tittibhasana – Firefly (Insect) Pose

IMG_2041

This pose is an incredible hip opener and wrist strengthener. Plus it is simply fun – if you let your ego go. It is an advanced pose, and as such, don’t expect to rock it straightaway, it is likely to require some diligence and practice. Poses that take some time to sort out can be the most empowering and gratifying.

I recommend a bit of time in malasana or in seated straddle stretch to open the hips prior to firefly. A lot of students find this pose to be more challenging on their tight wrists – so give your wrists some attention first too!

  • Bring feet wider than hip-width apart, with toes dialing outward. Bend the knees and slowly lower pelvis toward ground, while placing hands behind your feet, fingers facing forward and spread wide.
  • Hug your thighs toward mid-line around your arms as you bend your elbows to create a shelf for the backs of your thighs. Think of drawing your upper and lower body together as you straighten your knees.
  • An advancement is to continue to draw your upper and lower body together while straightening the elbows and lowering/hovering your buns above the ground.
  • Continue to hug your thighs around your arms and breathe! You are likely to wear you out pretty quickly if you are new to Firefly. Just keep at it!

Remember that if you fall on your butt, it isn’t going to hurt. It is more likely to make you laugh and that is a GOOD THING!
